Capturing Brotherhood: The Timeless Art of Ontario Byrd
Nostalgia.Warmth.Community.
These are just a few of the emotions photographer Ontario Byrd, also known as @wannabepeterparker, aims to evoke with his captivating art. His latest work, "33rd N Sunset," delves deep into these themes, particularly emphasizing the sense of brotherhood within the community.
"I'm trying to give the feeling of déjà vu, for people to feel like they've been there before," Byrd explains. "I want them to see their family members and friends in this light—in a simple, loving portrayal of black male friendships."
Inspired by familiar experiences from his own youth, Byrd recalls, "One memory I cherish is when I was seven. My dad and his friends would hang out in the driveway, chatting, blasting music, and genuinely enjoying each other's company. Looking back, those were the most beautiful forms of friendship I saw growing up. It became a prerequisite for me in my future friendships to feel this way." He accomplishes this beautifully in his recent autobiographical film project From a Byrd’s Eye View which chronicles his journey through adulthood. The film showcases the experiences and memories he shares with his loved ones, capturing timeless moments but also offering a deeper understanding of the artist himself.
Byrd's artistry lies in romanticizing the mundane and transforming it into the extraordinary. His work pays homage to his friends, his childhood, and the older men in his life, especially his late father. "It reminds me of my dad, and I feel like I'm honoring him when I create stories like this," he shares. His goal is to produce timeless art pieces that resonate now and continue to evoke the same emotions years later.
Through his photography, Byrd unites people across all walks of life. "Photography is my ultimate expression," he says. Inspired by the power to freeze time with the click of a shutter, he believes, "You are forever that person within that image."
